12 nights, Longyearbyen to Reykjavik

The long way south, by way of the loneliest island in the North Atlantic

Twelve nights that take the whole of northern Svalbard first, seven days of it, then turn south-west across the Greenland Sea to Jan Mayen, the Norwegian volcanic island that almost no ship visits, and on to Iceland’s Snæfellsnes peninsula and Reykjavik.

Jan Mayen is the reason to choose this voyage over the shorter ones. Beerenberg, its 2,277-metre volcano, is the northernmost active volcano on earth, the island has eighteen people on it, all of them at the weather station, and a landing there depends on the swell. Silver Endeavour gives it a full day.

A week in the north

Seven days in Svalbard’s northern region: the fjords of the north-west, the bird cliffs, the glacier fronts and the edge of the pack ice, two outings a day.

Day by day

Twelve nights, in outline

From Silversea’s published itinerary for 19 July 2027. The ice decides the days in Svalbard and the swell decides Jan Mayen; the full programme comes with the proposal we write for you.

Embark in the afternoon and sail at four for Isfjorden and the north.
